Inquiry

Description: In inquiry, I am in Graduation. To start off, we went to 7 tasters. Then we chose our top 3 via Google Forms. Then the teachers chose our groups from our selections.

The way I am benefiting the future is helping make Graduation Bigger and grander than it ever has. Like now it is at PNBHS, not our school hall.

Update: 3rd December 2015

What I did: I started by going through all the invitations to see if anyone was missed out, and no one was missed out. Then, I borrowed Troy's laptop and went through the slides to make sure nothing was missed out on.

Update: 10th December 2015

What I did: I went through all the slides for one final check, then I made mini hats for decoration.

Q1: Why did you choose this Inquiry group? I chose graduation because I had done it once and I wanted to do it again.

Q2: How did you show Agency, Creativity and Excellence? I showed Agency by getting the job done, even if it's by myself. I showed Creativity by instead of using cardboard on the back of The masks, to not make it flimsy, I used corrugated card. And I showed excellence by doing the job until I can't get it wrong.

Self-Managing Wall

I think I am a Self Directed learner because I carry my learning out of the border. I constincently am taking my work out of the beginners level, Self Managing.

The goal that I am currently working on is that I am able to Priortise my learning and show flexibility when changes need to be made.

The things I need to do to achieve this goal are to have abilities to handle changes because I can forget new changes, so if I change my work a bit more, then I will remember more so I can achieve this goal.

Book Bash Prediction 2015: Petronas

Title: Petronas looks like a book that I would like to read because there are towers called Petronas in Kuala Lumpur. Why is it called Petronas, not Towers.

Blurb: I like the blurb because it seemed like they were on a mystery about the Petronas. Why would they want to find out who left instead of taking there spot inside.

Cover Design: The cover looks cool because there is a bird, which might mean flying on a bird, and It just hooks me in.

Main Prediction: I think the book will have a bit of a Terrifing attack on the towers called Petronas, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Can Sleeping Too Much Make You Tired?

Description: In reading I watched a video about if you can sleep too much.

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0gbLGEdF3o

Summary: Can sleeping too much make you tired. The answer is yes. But how much should you sleep.  First, how old are you? Babies up to 2yrs old should sleep whenever, kids from 2-18 should sleep 7.5-9.5 hours, and adults should sleep between 7.5 and 8.5 hours. If you sleep too much, there is a higher chance of you getting heart disease.

Reading Followup

Description: In reading we had a workshop, then had a Followup to do. My Followup was to summarize a story about the history of WOW!

Suzie Moncrieff had an art gallery in Nelson, NZ. She wanted to promote her gallery, so she hired some designers to make art put onto the human body, instead of on the wall. She was not that impressed with lots of the garments, with them being knitted, but the next year, 1988 was LOADS better! The show got bigger and bigger! In 2004, WOW announced that They would move to Wellington to perform. The show grew popularity by 50%, with 35,000 people turning up!

Pae Tamariki Portfolio Sample

Description: Pae Tamariki is a Maōri festival in Palmerston North, which is schools in the Metro area who have a Kapa Haka group, and preform at the Regent on Broadway. This event stunned the city on the 31st July 2015.

Big Idea:
At Pae Tamariki, I felt quite excited to be doing this for a second time.

I felt most proud of me doing this again because performing in front of a big crowd is quite a big job, so I felt very, very lucky.

I found focusing challenging because I was quite excited for preforming.

I managed this challenge by thinking about other things like what's for dinner.

At Kapa Haka, I next want to explore more songs and cultural stuff like some of the history.

Feedback/FeedForward: I like the way you are honest and you were excited. Shaiv
Next time you can add a little bit more but it's looking good. Shaiv.

Maths Portfolio Sample

Description: In maths with Elly, we have been learning to use the box method both by dividing and multiplying. This has really helped me with my maths for really tricky questions, like 16x43.

Big Idea:

Image:
Feedback & Feedforward: I think you have done really well with the box method. With these pictures I think you have got how to do the box method. I think you should keep using this strategy because by looking at this post you have got the questions right. Great Work! Rosalind:)

Evaluation: I think I have gotten the hand of the multiplication, but I need help with the division.

Pop Art Portfolio Sample

Description: Each Thursday Afternoon, we go into 3 groups, Passion Projects with Suzanne, Pop Art With Kate, and Drama with Rebecca. I am in pop art. Pop Art is paper split in a quarter grid, then having a shape with non-constrasting bright colours, like green and ping, to make it pop. One example of a pop art artist which is an inspiration for me is Andy Warhol. Pop art was invented in 1955 in Britian, and in America by 1960. There are 2 types of pop art, Regular Pop art with a logo or image, and there is also word pop art. Personally, I like pop art. I have been working on mainly positioning different things.

Image:
Big Idea: We had to think of an image to put on to our pop art. I chose a plane, because planes are my passion. You are suppose to use non-contrasting bright colours to make it POP! I had to draw a plane, and make a stencil to trace with, and I split the page into quarters, and painted and outlined.

Feedback & FeedForward: I like your art and I like that added lots of colours and all the stuff that a real plane has but maybe you could make it look more realistic. Kiarna

Evaluation: I like how I did my Pop Art very efficiently, but next time I could slow down a bit and add more detail, not messy.

Writing Portfolio Sample

Description: In Rebecca's Writing Group, we have been learning about ideas. My goal is making a plan. We looked at an image as our motivation for the last 3 weeks.
Big Idea:
Stuck In a Bird's Cage by Tane

"SLAM"!, shouted the loud, yellow like the sun bird. "You really thought you could get away with 9 mean, rude crimes on me"!! The bird flapped its wings, and before it left, he said, "I'll be back in a few hours, with a shredder to DESTROY YOU"!

The cat was now stuck in an evil looking lab, with posters with plans to get free tickets to the cat's concert. Didn't I mention that Dylan the Cat is a singer? Well, he is. And that was a problem.

He had a concert at 7pm, and as you can see, I am trapped. He sneak leaned closer to the clock. This tick-tock object read 1:47pm. At exactly 4:45pm, the rude, impatient bird arrived with a shredder! The cat felt useless! At the minute the bird flicked the time switch, the bird remembered something.

2 years (Cat Time) ago, Dylan had a Legendary Competition., with the Rockers Prize (1st Prize) being backstage passes to his upcoming concert, Rock n Roll Beats! The bird was one number off, having 'UGA-593', instead of 'UGA-592'.

The cat chucked its paw on the buzzer to call the bird, then said poorly, with tears, "Please let me out. I will let you go to as many concerts as you want. Please"!

The yellow bird felt sorry for the cat, and unleashed the cat on one condition, to let the bird go to all of the concerts for free. The cat and bird became Best Friends and lived happily ever after.

Feedback/FeedForward: I think you did well but you need to not always put descriptive words #Jett

Evaluation: I like how I added lots of detail, but next time I could add more adjectives.

Production Portfolio Sample

Description: In a few weeks we are doing a production, which is an event which takes place every 2 years, and we preform in front of a croud of roughly 1,000 people. We have been making wearable arts by upcycling materials and reusing stuff. The main umbrella theme is 'Life', so my production group is 'Out of Africa'! I didn't choose my group because I was sick, but I am pretty happy with my group.

Friday 4th September 2015:
I have currently made a box mask, a corrugated card garment, a tin of fake coins, a wristband and a whip, like a rope. I am ready to add one more layer of paint to my mask, and where there is red on my garment like a paw, I will change it to blue. My next goal is to not add so many props, so I will add no more props. I think I have done great progress so far, but we still have 4 making days, so we will see what's next.

Finished Garment:

The materials that I used to create my garment were Corrugated Card, Paint, Shoe Box, Hot Glue, Rubber Band, Alcohol Bottle Caps, Tin Packet, Wooden Bits of thickish string, Paper, Frozen Yoghurt Bottle and Broken pieces of coat hangers.

The most challenging thing about production for me was trying to get my ideas together to make one AWESOME garment.

One way I demonstrated a growth mindset during production was I kept on saying, "I'm not finished YET".

Something I am really proud of about production was making a garment instead of wearing a costume.

Our school vision is to create agency, creativity and excellence. I showed this by thinking and creating original art. Most people in Out of Africa made animals, but I made an African Person.

Wind Tree

Description: In reading I did an activity where I watch a video about a wind tree to produce electricity, and summarize it with my own ideas and words.

Summary: In some cool locations, even in the urban area, look more closely at some trees, as these aren't any old tree, these trees have a roll to play. A very important one, energy. These trees could replace windmills, and produce more electricity, even when it isn't windy.

Reading Portfolio Sample T3 2015

Description: In reading we have done a portfolio sample on a Tic-Tac-Toe like last term. I did 'Wasteman', which is an activity where you have a summary written for a story about a waste man, but you have to write the whole story, so basically the opposite of summarizing, which is my goal.

Big Idea: Troy wrote a summary about this, and I wrote the full story. It was quite interesting writing a full story from a summary instead of writing a summary from a story. Overall, I thought it was kind of strange, because it was the opposite of what I have been learning. Anyway, I have learned how to summarize by looking for key words and key points, and putting all that together in a summary. Below is what I have done.

Summary: Waste Man was made by a man named Antony Gormley over a six-week period in 2006 out of 30 tonnes of recycled waste materials, it was then burnt a day after it was finished.

Full Story:

Feedback/FeedForward: I like how you added a lot of detail in your story but maybe you could say what is wasteman made out of. Houston.

Evaluation: I like my story and how I managed to get a little summary and turn it to a full story. Next time I could have more detail in my story, and explain the real textures from the summary into the story.

Tune in to Learning

Description: In Reading, I did an activity called 'Tune in th Learning', which is a website practising your summarising skills. I think I did pretty good at it, because I re-did it 2-3 times.

Below is a photo, and Click Here to practise it yourself.

A Cloudy Lesson

Description: I watched a Video called 'A Cloudy Lesson', which is a video learning that 'Good Things Come from Happy Accidents'.

I think this video means that you can make better inventions from mistakes. I think this video helped make bubbles from the boy falling.

Key Words

Description: In reading, we have been learning about 'Key Words', which are the main points of a piece of text.

In this story, the key words are Prison, Government, Taking Over.

Key words are just the main points about the story or text, like a title. If I was to choose some key words from the description, I would choose 'Key Words, Reading, Main Points and Text'.

Click Here to See the Article about the first Key Words.

Somebody Wanted But So Then

Description: In reading I have done an activity called 'Somebody Wanted But So Then', which is an activity where you read a story, and answer these questions.

So: They get to be on Social Media Nationwide!
Then: They announced that they will move the minions back to their house.

Roll and Retell: Obama Visits Kenya

Description: We had to do an activity called 'Roll and Retell', which is an activity where we roll a dice, and see what question we have to answer about our story. Mine is 'Obama Visits Kenya while President'.

Dice Number 3: Where does the story take place? Kenya
Dice Number 6: What questions do you have about the story? Why did Kenya spend so much money on one president, like do they do that to their president?
Dice Number 4: When does the story take place? Late July - Early August
Dice Number 1: What is the story mostly about? Obama visiting Kenya while President
Dice Number 2: Who are the main characters? Kenyan People and Barack Obama
Dice Number 5: What happened at the beginning, middle, and end of the story? Entirely about Obama's Visit to Kenya.

Image Prompts

Description: As a task, we had to write down some responses to an image to get us thinking about it.

My Response: Everyone and Everything living is good at something, just different things. For Example, I am good at IT, Reading, Writing and Mathematics, but I am just HORRIBLE at sports like running. From the image, A fish can swim, but can't climb. An owl can fly up, but can't swim.

Surfer Survives Shark Attack!

New Zealand 4th Most Peaceful country in the World

Description: This year, NZ has been ranked the 4th peaceful country in the world. Today I have some information about why NZ has been ranked 4th.

So the first thing you need to know is that NZ is very isolated. When I say Isolated, I mean we are 3,000km from the nearest country, Australia. Now you may think that NZ has a small army, so China could attack. One bit is true, NZ has a small army, but we have lots of people with us, like US, AU and UK. A reason a country like Syria isn't the safest, more like the most dangerous, is because 1, they are having a civil war and 2, they have a terrorist group called 'Islamic State'. I think NZ should be the safest country in the world because we have a small population of 4,500,000 and that means that we have a small crime population, but big enough to have a good army.

Kapa Haka Portfolio Sample (Tauira Kapa Haka Portfolio)

Description: Each Monday, we do something called 'Kapa Haka', which is a session where we learn about the Maori culture, sing sons, dance and the boys do a Haka. This is to protect the Maori Language and learn the Language.

Big Idea:
At kapahaka I enjoy learning the words for the songs, because I am part Maori and it teaches me stuff about NZ before Europeans came.

I am most proud of having the ability to preform to an audience, because when I was 5, I was very shy, so I am glad I can preform now.

I find doing the karaka challenging because everyone is speaking, and I can only hear bla bla bla.

I am managing this challenge by sometimes lip sinking it, and also trying to say it both at home and kapahaka.

A personal goal for me is to get others around the globe to learn the Maori Language and Saving the Maori Language.

Our school wide focus this term has been around showing excellence. I show this at kapahaka by doing the actions and helping others do it as well.

Feedback: I like how you put in about your feelings and you have been honest.
Feedforward: I think you should work on not to forget some words of the songs sometimes because sometimes in Kapahaka I can here you forgetting some words. #Houston

New NZ Flag

Description: In New Zealand, there will be a vote this year for a new flag. One reason we might get a new flag is that we aren't ruled by England anymore. I have chosen a flag to say why I like it.

The New NZ Flag that I want

The reason I want this flag is 1. It doesn't have anything about UK, 2. It has the silver fern with the four stars and last, It represent's a bit of the country's history.

If you are in New Zealand, vote for a new flag, and hope that this flag wins!

Sunday 14 June 2015

Writing Portfolio Sample

Description: This term we chose a goal to focus on in Writing. I chose Sentences, because my writing doesn't have a mix of long and short sentences.

Big Idea: A complex sentence is a sentence with an independent and a dependent clause. This is an example: Tane is a boy, with brown eyes. To make sure it is a complex sentence, you need to add a comma in the correct place.

Feedback:I liked how you added heaps of complex sentences.
Feedforward: I can't find any feedforward. #Finis

Evaluation: I like that I added quite a few complex sentences. Next time I could add 1 or 2 per paragraph/

Wednesday 10 June 2015

Maths Portfolio Sample

Description: In maths this term we have been learning about different addition and subtraction strategies. My maths teacher is Ebony.

Big Idea: We have been learning different strategies. I have learned Rounding & Compensating, which is a strategy where you make a tidy number, e.g, 42+69, you would add one to the 69, to make it 70. So you know that 70+42=112-1=111, because you need to get the one from somewhere. I have also learned the Reversibility strategy, and that is you have a question like 67-23=?, and you add it to get the answer. So 23+?=67. 23+40=63+4=67. 40+4=44, so 67-23=44.

Feedback: I like how in the big idea you put all the questions and put the answer in and you said how you worked them out. #Houston.
Feedforward: Maybe next time you could not put all the answers down and just put the questions because they can work them out themselves and it is quite confusing when you look at it. #Houston.

Evaluation: I like how I explained that something didn't work. Next time I could write down neater.

Wednesday 3 June 2015

Science Portfolio Sample

Description: A few weeks ago, we had some science tasters to see what we wanted to do in science. We went to Troy's Science Taster about Food Chains and Webs, Suzanne's Taster about the Digestive System, and Ebony's Taster about Animals. Then was the hard bit, choosing!!! The reason this was hard was because we had to have 2 choices, but I got my first choice, Troy Science Taster.

Big Idea: We have been learning about different animals and plants habitats. We have also found out if we took away the sun, nothing would survive, so we need to rely on the sun. Here is one example, beef. The beef comes from cows, cows eat grass, and grass needs the sun to survive. If the sun dissapears, the grass stops growing, the cows wil die from hunger, and there will be no beef in the world what so ever!!! So really, we need to rely on the sun to survive.

Feedback/Feedforward: I really like how much detail you put into your description and your big idea. Next time I think you could add a little more to your Evaluation and just make the picture a little clearer.

Evaluation: I think I really explained my Lunchbox Food Web quite well, it has everything that I ate. Next time I could spread the poster out more so it is not so cramped.

Tuesday 2 June 2015

Reading Portfolio Sample

Description: Each week in Poutama, we have been expected to do 3 Tic-Tac-Toes (which are activities that we can do, 2 must does, and 1 can do. This week, week 7, has been different. We have no workshops, and 1 Tic-Tac-Toe to do, so we can have time for our post. My goal has been comprehension.

Success Criteria:
1. In workshops we have been learning to make text to text connections. Text to text is a piece of text which is similar to another piece of text.
2. Text to world is one piece of text to the world similar.
3. Text to self connections is something in a piece of text similar to you.

My Tic-Tac-Toe was "Just Like Me", which is an activity where you draw a character from a book, and you write things which are the same about your book character.

Feedback/Feedforward: I like your drawing and your connections but maybe add more Ideas. Houston
Evaluation: I really like how I explained myself with Greg Heffley, we are really similar, but maybe to similar.

Wednesday 20 May 2015

Tane's "Lunchbox Food Web"

Description: In Troy's Science Group, we have been making food webs, which are webs which connect from one type of food to another. We made a Lunchbox Food Web, to show that 'Food doesn't just magically appear in supermarkets.

Catch Me If You Can- Defense

Description:
Every week we learn about skills and movement that will help us play sports. This term’s focus has been around defense. We made a video showing some of the goals we have been practicing. I have highlighted the thing I think I have done well YELLOW and one thing I would like to work on PINK.

Body:
WALT: Defensive skills and movements
Success Criteria:

Body Movement
Weight on balls of feet
Feet shoulder width apart
Knees flexed
Concentration and eyes on ball, head and eyes up
Push hard off outside foot and go forwards to attack pass
Quick small feet, stay on balls of feet
Arms within confines of body
Take feet to ball
Land with a SBP
Intercepting
Body angled to see player and ball
Anticipate pass and player movement

Restrictive Marking
Meet player as they start towards the ball/where they want to go
Stay close to the attacking player
Head and eyes up, arms close to body to avoid obstruction/contact
Angle body so attacking player is ‘pushed’ away from where he/she wants to go
0.9m from ball carrier

Evaluation: I personally, don't really like sports, so doing CMIYC was leaving my comfort zone. I think that with all the skills I have learnt, I would give myself 7/10
Feedback/Feedforward: I think the same you did really well with CMIYC but you could push yourself just that little bit froward #Kyan

Writing T2 W4 (Tic-Tac-Toe)

Description: Complete the follow up task from your writing workshop. Ensure you record evidence of this on your blog for checking.

Complex Sentence: After seeing how cool turtles are, Turtles are one of my favourite animals.

                                    Dependent                                                         Indepedent

In turtles lives, they spend 99% of their lives swimming. Sea Turtles can swim the entire ocean, because of food. Turtles swim thousands of miles, so they can lay their eggs. Motherback Turtles can get so fat, they can weigh up to 1,000 pounds. Mother sea turtles lay their eggs every 3 years. Turtles can swim all the way to the cold waters of Canada.

Description: It's the last day of term, so we mad a Two Stars and a Wish to celebrate our learning. Here is mine for you to see.

Sunday 29 March 2015

Marae Storytelling

Purpose: Create a story to share orally
Description: Oral storytelling is a Maori tradition. We have been planning our own story to tell on the Marae in Week 7.

The Big Idea: I shared my story called "Where do Humans come From". The Maōri culture do 'Storytelling', either to tell children how things work, or they tell a warning story. I told a Scientific story. I had to think iof something that SOUNDS scientific, but isn't. I decided to do "Where do humans come from?"

Evaluation: I think I was very original when I had the idea, I haven't  heard anyone talking about it, I haven't seen anyone preform it. Next time I can work on not doing everything like a million times.

Saturday 28 March 2015

Ability to Act T1

Description:
We had to make a little 30 second (or lower) movie about our Ability To Act, instead of standing around, doing nothing. We used a video called 'Stuck behind an Escalator' to start us up.

The Big Idea:
We did this so others could get a message to act, For Example, Let's say that someone is stuck on the first branch and there was a ladder to get down. That person would still be stuck in the tree and not looking down at the ladder. You would think that the person should just look down and come down, but they didn't.

Evaluation: I think that we managed to record it effectilly, we had a few bloopers and then we managed to make the final video in about an hour. I think that next time we could have different places where the camera could go.

Feedback: I think you did good at speaking to the camera
Feedforward: Next time you should move the camera closer.

Te Ahu a Turanga Noho Marae

Description: In week 7, we had an overnight stay at the local Marae in Woodville.  We were immersed in Maori culture and participated in a range of activities.  We set two goals to focus on during our stay.

Big Idea:
1. Did you achieve your goals? How do you know?
I think I achieved my goal to be able to walk the Manawatu Gorge, because I didn't stop, and I kept saying "Never Give Up!!!". I am sure to say that I did sleep OK, because I predicted that I sleep for about 5 hours in total. I found it hard to sleep because I wasn't used to sleeping with 60 other people.

2. What are you most proud of from the marae stay and why?
I am most proud of being able to do the Manawatu Gorge Walk, because I am not a fan of exercising at all, so being able to do the walk was really new to me, and I enjoyed it.

3. What challenged you the most and why?
The String Games challenged me the most, because I had to get my fingers used to the string. It a lot of time, but after about 1 hour, I could do it.

Shape's with Troy

Description: We have been learning about Geometry for Maths for the past few weeks. We looked at all the different types of shapes and in particular triangles. We have learnt that there are 4 different types of triangles and we created something to share our understanding about each of them.

The Big Idea: I have been working with Houston to create a poster about Triangles, so others who haven't been in our group learning with us, they can look at it and understand.

Evaluation: I think we did well with explaining how many even sides and angles the triangles have. I think we could improve on saying what angles are on what side.

Feedback: I think you did good at making it big and bold and I like how you have a title and I know the four different triangles.
Feedforward: I think you could stick with 2 colors because there are lots of colors. #Jake😃

Monday 2 March 2015

Star Reading Test

Description: We did a test The Government set us called 'Star Test', which is a test on our reading to see how we are doing. I got a Stanine 8 in total. We get compared with other students in the country as well.
The Big Idea: My goal is to improve on my Comprehension. I will improve this by if I don't understand a word in a book, look it up in a dictionary and if I don't understand it in the dictionary, I will ask someone else or look it up on my device.

Swimming Goals T1 2015

Description:
This term, we have had a goal that we want to acheive by the time swimming sports has arrived in Week 7. We swim 3 times a week (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday), so we don't have much time to acheive it.

The Big Idea:
My Goal is to be able to manage doing backstroke. I will acheive this by practicing every time I get the opportunity to go swimming. I will practise like I am practicing Dawn to Dusk.

Evaluation:
I think I really improved on my backstroke, because now I can see what I am doing, and not moving too much.

Number Maths T1 2015

Description:
In class we have been doing different maths tests. I nailed stage four, stage five and Stage 6, well, it was really hard. I was warned by Troy that the test was going to be hard. We had to get 40/50 or over to pass. I made it to Stage 6.

Stage 4
Stage 5:
Stage 6
The Big Idea:
I have made it to Stage 6. With our Stage 6 test, we had a second chance to redeem ourselves. I managed to get another 5 questions correct. We highlighted our questions that we got wrong in pink. Now I know that my goal is to write numbers in order to 1,000,000, including fractions.
